The wonderful world of listening to the radio

The Moosbrunn antenna is no more

The Moosbrunn shortwave antenna is no more. In August last year I still received a QSL email for the Ö1 program on 6155 kHz. Utilization of the Moosbrunn transmitters had gone down for years, until there was only a 75 minute broadcast left. But following the Russian invasion in the Ukraine the number of broadcasts went up with daily morning, afternoon, and evening programs. With global tensions rising the decision to destroy the Moosbrunn facilities is not without controversy. Last week a petition was started to reconsider. But with what seemed apparent haste, the antennas were blown up…

Below a picture of the antenna when it was still operational. It was basically an array of dipoles in front of a curtain reflector. The whole ensemble could be rotated to give the beam the desired direction.

QSL Radio Ö1 Moosbrunn 6155 kHz

I received a fully detailed email to QSL Radio Ö1 Moosbrunn received on 6155 kHz. I sent my report to oe1.service@orf.at .

QSL email from Radio Ö1 Moosbrunn 6195 kHz

Radio Österreich International, also known as “Austria Calling” among English listeners, discontinued operations in 2003. Shortwave operations continued as Radio Ö1 International, but got reduced in coverage and quality. In 2010 there was only a 75 minute program on 6155 kHz left.

From March 2022 onwards, in response to the war in the Ukraine, it was decided to increase the number of broadcasts again. With 300 kW there are now morning, afternoon and evening programs on 6155, 13730 and 5940 respectively.

To honor the good old days: below the QSL card from “Austria Calling” as I received it in 1979.

QSL 100 kW Marathon Moosbrunn 6070 kHz

Several program providers were very active during the Christmas season. I already reported on RNEI and friends, active on 5940 kHz, but hampered by Radio Piepzender…. The 100 kW Marathon organized by SM Radio Dessau was more succesful. Good reception without interference. While I listened to Dessau and DARC I provided details on the other stations… which cost me browny points 😜. I promise to do better next year mr. Max Berger from SM Radio Dessau!

I sent reports to some of the individual contributors… So far only Intensiv Radio from RadioDXfreunde replied…
